Announcement Regarding Manual Updates

Apr. 10, 2025

Greetings Everyone!

During 2024, the Executive Board of the American Board of Stuttering, Cluttering, and Fluency Disorders considered and voted on many important updates to the Standards and Procedures Manual for Specialty Certification in Stuttering, Cluttering, and Fluency Disorders. These updates
were influenced by feedback from our membership and other relevant stakeholders. A special thanks to Dr. Sue Ellen Krause, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-SCF, BCS-CL, the Board’s liaison to the Committee on Clinical Specialty Certification for her assistance throughout the revision process.
These changes were then approved by the Committee on Clinical Specialty Certification and the Council for Clinical Certification at ASHA.

We will be hosting a Roundtable in May to review the manual changes in detail. In the meantime, I wanted to make you aware of key changes to the manual. Further details will be shared at the Roundtable.

• A maximum of 90 hours in related clinical activities (e.g. teaching a course, research,
facilitating a support group) may now be counted by all initial applicants toward the
required clinical contact hours
• A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must by in the area of cluttering and/or
fluency disorders for all applicants
• For active candidates, 2 videos per case for a total of 6 videos are required for the
Portfolio rather than 3 per case
• Active Specialist may now count up to 20 continuing education hours that are non-ASHA
CEUS towards their maintenance requirement
• Active Specialists must now earn a minimum of 5 continuing education hours in the area
of cluttering and/or fluency disorders during their maintenance interval
• Lifetime members may now count up to 10 continuing education hours that are nonASHA CEUS towards their maintenance requirements
• Lifetime members must now earn a minimum of 3 continuing education hours in the
area of cluttering and/or fluency disorders during their maintenance interval
• A process for processing feedback and formal complaints has been added
• Details regarding the formation of the initial Board were added
• Language in the manual was updated to reflect the name change

Thank you to all that provided feedback and suggestions to the Board and we hope you appreciate these meaningful changes.
